The envelopes always contained the same sentence:
“Some promises take longer than expected.”
There was never a signature.
Odessa had no idea who sent them.

Evander handed her another photograph.
Silas was standing outside a hospital.

The Truth About the Letters
Silas had been diagnosed with a serious illness shortly after leaving.
He didn't want his family to watch him struggle from far away.
So he disappeared.
But he never forgot Odessa.
Every year, he prepared a letter.
When he became too sick to continue, he asked Evander to keep his promise.
That was why the letters had continued.
Odessa covered her mouth.
“Where is he now?”
Evander was silent.
Then he said:
“He died three months ago.”
Odessa felt her heart break.
She had spent nine years wondering who was writing to her.

Evander gave her one final envelope.

It was addressed simply:
“For Odessa, when she finally knows.”
She opened it with shaking hands.
The letter was from Silas.
“I'm sorry I let silence become such a large part of our story. I wanted you to remember me as your brother who believed in you, not as someone you had to worry about.”
Then came the final words.
“Please don't spend the rest of your life waiting for people to return. Go where life is taking you. Laugh loudly. Love without fear. And when someone needs you, stay.”
Odessa cried beneath the old clock tower.
But this time, the tears were different.
She wasn't waiting anymore.
She finally understood that the letters had never been asking her to wait for Silas.
They had been reminding her to keep living.
Odessa folded the final letter carefully and placed it against her heart.
Then she looked at Evander.
“Thank you for keeping your promise.”
He smiled.
“Your brother made me promise something else.”
Odessa looked at him.
“What?”
Evander smiled.
“He said I should make sure you didn't spend your thirtieth birthday alone.”
For the first time that evening, Odessa laughed.
Life Lesson
