Every night at exactly 10:17, one window across the street would turn on.
The apartment looked empty.
No furniture.
No curtains.
No movement.
Just one warm yellow light.
At first, Lyra ignored it.
Then she noticed something strange.
The light went off at exactly 10:32 every night.
Fifteen minutes.
Always the same.
The Note on Her Window
One rainy evening, Lyra returned home and found a small envelope taped to her window.
There was no name on it.
Inside was a single sentence:
“Thank you for keeping your window open.”
Lyra immediately closed it.
She looked across the street.
The apartment was dark.
The next night, the light never appeared.
Neither did the night after that.
For the first time, Lyra realized she had become attached to something she didn't understand.
The Woman Who Knew
On the fourth morning, Lyra saw an elderly woman standing outside the building across the street.
She was carrying a small box.
Lyra crossed the road.
“Excuse me,” she said. “Do you know who lives in apartment 4B?”
The woman looked at her for several seconds.
“Nobody anymore.”
“What happened?”
The woman sighed.
“A young man named Evren lived there.”
Lyra's heart skipped.
“Was he the one turning the light on?”
The woman nodded.
“Every night.”
The Reason for the Light
Evren had lived alone after losing his wife.
His wife had worked night shifts at a hospital.
Before leaving each evening, she would look across the street and wave at him from the hospital bus stop.
One winter night, she never came home.
After that, Evren began leaving the apartment light on every night at 10:17.
That had been the time her bus normally passed his window.
He said he didn't want her to come home one day and find the apartment dark.
Lyra felt tears in her eyes.
“But why did he stop?”
The elderly woman looked down at the box.
“He moved to a care home last month.”
Then she handed Lyra the box.
“He asked me to give you this if you ever came over.”
The Box
Inside was a small table lamp.
There was also a letter.
Lyra opened it carefully.
“I noticed your window was always open. I used to imagine that someone on the other side understood why I kept the light on.”
She continued reading.
“When you stopped closing your curtains at night, I felt less alone. I never knew your name, but your little window became part of my routine.”
At the bottom was one final sentence.
“If you ever wonder why someone leaves a light on, don't assume they're waiting for someone. Sometimes they're simply trying to remember what it felt like to be loved.”
Lyra couldn't stop crying.
10:17
That evening, Lyra placed the little lamp beside her window.
At 10:17, she turned it on.
She didn't know whether Evren could see it from the care home.
Maybe he couldn't.
But she left it on anyway.
The next morning, the elderly woman knocked on her door.
She was smiling.
“Evren called me last night,” she said.
Lyra's eyes filled with tears.
“He said the street looked different.”
“Different how?”
The woman smiled.
“He said someone finally turned the light back on.”
Lyra looked toward the empty apartment across the street.
For months, Evren had left a light on because he couldn't let go of someone he loved.
Now someone else was leaving a light on so he would know he wasn't forgotten.
Life Lesson
We often don't know the silent battles people carry behind ordinary routines. A small gesture of understanding can mean more than we ever realize, especially to someone who feels forgotten.
