It wasn't addressed to him.
In fact, it wasn't addressed to anyone.
The envelope simply said:
“Open this when you are ready to meet her.”
Corin laughed.
He was thirty-four, single, and had stopped believing that love arrived when you least expected it.
Still, curiosity won.
He opened the letter.
Inside was a woman's handwriting.
“You don't know me yet. But one day, you will.”
The Woman in the Letter
The letter continued with details about a woman named Mae.
She loved lemon tea.
She hated crowded restaurants.
She always carried a blue umbrella, even when rain wasn't expected.
Corin smiled.
It sounded ridiculous.
Then he read the final line.
“When you meet her, don't walk away because she will be afraid too.”
There was no date.
No explanation.

Corin almost didn't go.
But the next Saturday, curiosity took him to the bookstore.
He walked inside.
At first, nothing seemed unusual.
Then he saw her.
A woman standing near the poetry section.
She was holding a cup of lemon tea.
And beside her was a blue umbrella.
Corin froze.
She looked at him.
“Are you Corin?”
He couldn't answer immediately.
“How do you know my name?”
She looked confused.
“I don't.”
Then she noticed the envelope in his hand.

The Second Letter
Mae reached into her bag and pulled out an identical envelope.
Her hands were trembling.
“I found mine three years ago,” she said.
Corin opened his eyes wide.
“What did yours say?”
Mae handed it to him.
The first line read:
“You don't know him yet. But one day, you will.”
Corin stared at her.
The letters were written by the same person.
But neither of them knew who that person was.
They spent the afternoon comparing the letters.
Each contained small details about the other.
Details neither could possibly have known.
At the bottom of Mae's letter was one final sentence:
“If you meet him, tell him I'm sorry I couldn't stay long enough to explain.”
The Answer Hidden in the Book
Corin returned to the secondhand shop.
He showed the owner the book where he had found the letter.
The owner immediately recognized it.
“That belonged to an elderly woman named Elara.”
Corin asked if she had written the letters.
The owner shook his head.
“No. Her husband did.”
Then he explained something strange.
Elara's husband had been a writer.
Before he died, he wrote letters for people he believed were meant to find each other.
But Corin and Mae weren't supposed to receive those letters.
At least, not yet.
The owner opened an old notebook.
Inside was a list of names.
Corin's name was there.
So was Mae's.
Beside them was a date.
The date was ten years earlier.
Why He Wrote the Letters
The truth was surprisingly simple.
Elara's husband had met Corin's mother and Mae's father many years earlier.
Both families had suffered difficult losses.
He had watched their children grow from a distance.
He believed they shared something important.
Both were afraid of being hurt again.
So he wrote two letters.
Not because he could predict the future.
Because he knew that sometimes people need a little courage to take the first step.
Years later, the letters finally brought Corin and Mae to the same bookstore.
Mae smiled.
“Do you believe the letters brought us here?”
Corin looked at her.
“I don't know.”
He paused.
“But I'm glad they did.”
Mae smiled.
“Me too.”
They left the bookstore together that evening.
Neither of them knew what would happen next.
But for the first time in years, neither was afraid to find out.
