For twenty-six years, Nadia believed her mother didn't love her.
Her mother never hugged her.
Never said “I love you.”
And whenever Nadia tried to talk about feelings, her mother changed the subject.
So when her mother died, Nadia felt something she was ashamed to admit.
Relief.
At least now, she thought, she would never have to wonder why her mother had been so cold.
Then she found the note.
It was tucked inside an old library book.
Nadia had never seen it before.
The handwriting belonged to her mother.
The note said:
“If Nadia ever finds this, please tell her I was never good at showing love.”
Nadia's hands began shaking.
There was another sentence underneath.
“I hope she knows how hard I tried.”
Tears filled her eyes.
But there was no explanation.
Only an address.
The next morning, Nadia went to the address.
It was a small house occupied by an elderly woman named Mirelle.
When Nadia showed her the note, Mirelle immediately began crying.
“You're her daughter.”
Nadia nodded.
“You knew my mother?”
“For thirty years.”
Mirelle invited her inside.
Then she told Nadia something she had never known.
When Nadia was six years old, her mother had been diagnosed with a serious illness.
Doctors told her she might not live long enough to raise her daughter.
So she made a decision.
She would never let Nadia become emotionally dependent on her.
She thought distance would make losing her easier.
“She believed she was protecting you,” Mirelle said.
Nadia whispered:
“She never told me.”
“She thought you were too young.”
“And later?”
Mirelle looked down.
“Later, she was too afraid.”
Nadia returned home and opened every box her mother had left behind.
She found birthday cards.
School photographs.
Old drawings.
And dozens of letters.
Every letter began:
“My darling Nadia…”
Her mother had written about every birthday she missed.
Every school performance she secretly attended.
Every time Nadia thought her mother didn't care.
She had been there.
Just never close enough to be noticed.
Nadia sat on the floor surrounded by the letters.
For years, she had believed her mother had given her nothing.
Now she realized her mother had given her love in the only way she knew how.
It wasn't the love Nadia had needed.
But it had been love.
Months later, Nadia returned to the library.
She placed a new note inside the same book.
It said:
“Mom, I finally understand. I wish you had told me.”
Then she closed the book.
She didn't forgive her mother because everything had been right.
She forgave her because she finally understood the fear behind the silence.
And sometimes understanding is the first step toward peace.
