Sophie was running through the station when the train doors closed.
She had missed it by seconds.
Frustrated, she dropped onto a bench.
Then a man sitting beside her said:
“Maybe you're not supposed to catch that train.”
She looked at him.
“That's not very helpful.”
He smiled.
“Give it ten minutes.”
Sophie rolled her eyes.
Ten minutes later, she received a phone call that changed everything.
Her mother was crying.
“Sophie, I need you to come home.”
“What's wrong?”
“Your father is in the hospital.”
Sophie froze.
She had been planning to leave the city that morning for a new job.
Her father had always encouraged her to go.
But now she was suddenly afraid she wouldn't see him again.
She rushed to the next platform.
The same man from the bench appeared.
“Are you okay?”
“My father is sick.”
He didn't ask questions.
He simply said:
“I'll help you find the fastest way there.”
His name was Daniel.
He worked at the railway station.
He found her a different route and even helped her get a ticket.
Before she left, Sophie thanked him.
“I probably wouldn't have made it without you.”
Daniel smiled.
“Maybe missing that train wasn't such a bad thing.”
Sophie reached the hospital in time.
Her father survived.
But the experience changed her.
She realized how quickly life could change.
So she returned home instead of taking the job.
Months passed.
One afternoon, she returned to the station.
She wanted to thank Daniel properly.
But he wasn't there.
She asked around.
“He left three months ago,” someone told her.
Sophie was disappointed.
Then the station manager handed her a small envelope.
“He left this for you.”
Inside was a note:
“I hope your father is okay. And I hope you eventually catch the right train.”
Sophie smiled.
At the bottom was a phone number.
She called.
Daniel answered.
“Hello?”
Sophie laughed.
“I missed another train.”
There was silence.
Then Daniel laughed too.
“Where are you?”
“Outside the station.”
“Wait there.”
Ten minutes later, he appeared.
They went for coffee.
Then dinner.
Then another coffee.
They talked for hours.
Not about missed trains.
About dreams.
Family.
Fear.

Two years later, Daniel proposed.
Sophie looked at the ring and laughed.
“You know, I used to hate missing that train.”
Daniel smiled.
“And now?”
She held his hand.
