"Promise me you'll never listen to this voicemail... until you really need it."
My mom said those words with a smile after accidentally leaving me a voice message one afternoon.
I laughed.
"It can't be that important."
She smiled again.
"One day, you'll understand."
At the time, I thought she was joking.
So I saved the voicemail and forgot about it.
Two years later...
Cancer took her away.
Life became strangely quiet.
I still reached for my phone whenever something good happened, wanting to call her.
Every birthday felt incomplete.
Every holiday felt a little smaller.
There were nights when I almost played that voicemail.
But I remembered my promise.
So I didn't.
Years passed.
I got a new job.
Moved to a new city.
Met someone I wanted to spend my life with.
Slowly, happiness returned.
Then everything changed again.
One rainy Tuesday morning, my company announced massive layoffs.
By lunchtime, I no longer had a job.
The same week, my relationship ended.
A month later, I was packing boxes in a tiny apartment, wondering where life had gone wrong.
That night...
I remembered the voicemail.
For the first time, I pressed play.
There was a few seconds of silence.
Then I heard her laugh.
"Oh good... you actually kept this."
I froze.
It felt like she was sitting beside me.
"If you're hearing this..."
"...life probably feels impossible right now."
Tears filled my eyes.
She continued.
"I don't know what happened."
"Maybe someone broke your heart."
"Maybe you lost your job."
"Maybe you think you've failed."
She paused.
"But I know something about you."
"You always believe today will last forever."
"When you're happy, you think happiness will never end."
"When you're hurting, you think the pain never will either."
"But you're wrong."
I couldn't stop crying.
Her voice was calm.
"Bad days are visitors."
"They unpack their bags..."
"They make a mess..."
"But they always leave."
She laughed softly.
"I've seen you survive every hard thing life has given you."
"You just forgot."
Another pause.
"So tomorrow..."
"Get out of bed."
"Open the curtains."
"Drink some water."
"And take one small step."
"Not ten."
"Just one."
"Because that's how people find their way back."
The voicemail ended with words I'll never forget.
"I'm already proud of the person you'll become after this."
The room was completely silent.
Except...
I wasn't.
Something inside me had changed.
The next morning, I opened the curtains.
I updated my résumé.
Applied for one job.
Then another.
Weeks later, I found work I loved even more than my old job.
Months later, I met people who became lifelong friends.
A year later, I listened to the voicemail again.
This time...
I smiled through my tears.
My mother hadn't predicted my future.
She had simply understood something about life.
Storms always feel endless while you're standing in them.
But they never last forever.
Now, whenever someone I love is going through a difficult time, I tell them the same thing my mom told me.
"Take one small step today."
Because hope doesn't usually arrive all at once.
Sometimes...
It arrives one step at a time.
Life Lesson:
Hard times can make us believe they will never end, but every storm eventually passes. When life feels overwhelming, don't focus on the whole journey just take one small step forward.
