She was only searching for her phone charger.
But when she opened the glove compartment, a cream-colored envelope slipped onto the floor.
She picked it up.
There was a wedding invitation inside.
She smiled at first.

Emma stopped breathing.

“No.”

“What happened?”

“Who is Olivia?”
His face changed.

“Why are you asking?”
“Because I found your wedding invitation.”
Silence.
Noah closed his eyes.
Emma felt her heart breaking.
“You're getting married?”
“Yes.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“To her?”
“No.”
“Then who?”
Noah looked at her.
“You.”
Emma stared at him.
“What?”
He reached into the back seat and pulled out another envelope.

She couldn't speak.
Noah laughed nervously.
“Olivia is my sister.”
Emma blinked.
“Your sister?”

“She changed her last name?”
“She got married last year.”

“I was planning a surprise.”
Emma looked at the invitation again.
“But why does it say Noah Carter & Olivia Bennett?”
“Because the printer messed up the names.”
She stared at him.
“You had me believing you were marrying another woman.”
“I know.”
“That is the worst surprise ever.”
“I know.”
She started laughing.
Then she started crying.
Noah reached for her hand.
“I wanted to propose tonight.”
He pulled a small box from his pocket.
Emma looked at it.
“You've been carrying that this whole time?”
“Since yesterday.”
She shook her head.
“You're terrible at surprises.”
“Apparently.”
He opened the box.
Inside was a ring.
Not huge.
Not flashy.
Just simple and beautiful.
Noah looked into her eyes.
“Emma, I don't want a perfect life.”
He paused.
“I want our life.”
Her tears returned.
“I want the arguments.”
“The stupid jokes.”
“The late-night conversations.”
“The Sunday mornings when neither of us wants to get out of bed.”
He smiled.
“And I want every ordinary day with you.”
Emma looked at the ring.
Then at him.
“You really thought this was a good way to propose?”
“No.”
She laughed.
“I honestly have no idea what I was thinking.”
Emma held out her hand.
“Yes.”
Noah froze.
“Yes?”
“Yes, you idiot.”
He slipped the ring onto her finger.
Then Emma suddenly looked serious.
“One question.”
“What?”
“Who's Olivia actually marrying?”
Noah laughed.
“My sister's husband.”
Emma stared at him.
“You are never allowed to plan another surprise.”
“I accept those terms.”
Six months later, Emma and Noah were married.
At their reception, Noah's sister gave a speech.
She held up the original invitation.
The room erupted in laughter.
Then she looked at Emma.
“I still feel terrible about this.”
Emma smiled.
“Don't.”
She looked at Noah.
“He gave me the biggest scare of my life.”
Noah raised his glass.
“But she still said yes.”
Emma smiled.
Because years later, whenever someone asked how Noah proposed, she didn't tell them about the ring first.
She told them about the invitation.
The wrong names.
The terrible misunderstanding.
