Maribel was cleaning out a drawer when she found her husband's old wallet.
He had stopped using it years ago.
Inside were faded cards, an expired driver's license, and a few old receipts.
One receipt caught her attention.
It was from a small bookstore.

Maribel immediately remembered that day.

Maribel had never known Jules had bought it.

There was handwriting on the back.
“If I see her again, I won't run.”

They laughed.

“You bought it because of me?”
“I bought it because I needed to believe that starting again was possible.”
He paused.
“Meeting you just made me believe it a little faster.”
Maribel smiled.
But then she noticed another line written beneath the first one.
“Don't tell her yet.”
She laughed.
“You kept this secret for fourteen years?”
Jules nodded.
“I wanted to tell you many times.”
“Why didn't you?”
He looked at her.
“Because I was afraid you'd think our first meeting wasn't special.”
The Truth About That Day
Maribel reached for his hand.
“It was special because we both chose to stay.”
Jules smiled.
Then he admitted one more thing.
He had returned to the bookstore the following week.
He didn't know whether Maribel would come back.
She did.
She had been looking for him too.
Neither had realized it at the time.
Fourteen years later, they were sitting together in the same home, laughing about how afraid they had both been to take the first step.
Maribel placed the old receipt inside a small frame.
She put it beside their wedding photograph.
