Seven days before her wedding, Olivia received a message from her fiancé.
“We need to cancel everything.”
She stared at the screen.
No explanation.
No phone call.

She called him immediately.

For three years, Olivia had believed Daniel was the man she would spend her life with.
Now, one week before their wedding, he had disappeared.

He looked exhausted.
“Daniel asked me to give you this.”
He handed her an envelope.

Inside was a photograph of a hospital.

“What is this?”
Marcus sat down.
“Daniel has been hiding something from you.”
“What?”
“He's sick.”
Olivia stared at him.
“How sick?”
Marcus didn't answer immediately.

“He was diagnosed months ago.”

“Why didn't he tell me?”
“Because he knew you would stay.”
“That doesn't make sense.”
“It does to him.”
Marcus explained that Daniel believed Olivia had sacrificed too much for their relationship already.
He had watched her turn down a job opportunity in another city.
He had seen her postpone her dreams to build a life with him.
And when he received his diagnosis, he became convinced that marrying him would trap her in a life she never chose.
So he decided to disappear.
Not because he stopped loving her.
Because he loved her so much that he thought leaving was the only way to set her free.
Olivia started crying.
“That wasn't his decision to make.”
Marcus nodded.
“I know.”
Olivia found Daniel at the small lake where they had first met.
He was sitting alone on a bench.
She walked toward him.
“You're an idiot.”
Daniel looked up.
“I know.”
“You don't get to decide what I want.”
“I know.”
“You don't get to destroy our relationship because you're afraid.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“I was scared.”
“So was I.”
She sat beside him.
For a while, neither spoke.
Then Olivia took his hand.
“I don't know what the future looks like.”
Daniel looked at her.
“But I know I want to face it with you.”
He shook his head.
“You shouldn't have to.”
“I choose to.”
Daniel began crying.
Olivia smiled through her own tears.
“Our wedding might be cancelled.”
He nodded.
“But our relationship isn't.”
A year later, Daniel's treatment had gone better than expected.
They were sitting in the same place by the lake.
Daniel reached into his pocket.
Olivia laughed.
“Again?”
He smiled.
“I have a question.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“Try not to cancel the wedding this time.”
“I promise.”
He opened the ring box.
“Will you marry me?”
Olivia looked at him.
“Only if you promise never to make a life-changing decision for both of us.”
Daniel smiled.
“I promise.”
She held out her hand.
“Yes.”
This time, there was no fear.
