The Phone Number Written Inside the Library Book

I borrowed an old novel from my town's library.

It wasn't popular. The cover was faded, the pages were yellow, and someone had repaired the spine with clear tape years ago.

As I flipped through the first few pages, something caught my eye.

Inside the front cover, written neatly in blue ink, was a sentence.

"If you ever need someone to talk to, call me."

Under it was a phone number.

There was no name.

No date.

No explanation.

At first, I smiled.

Someone must have been joking.

I almost ignored it.

But for some reason, I took a picture before returning the book to my bag.

Days passed.

I kept thinking about that message.

Who writes something like that inside a library book?

One rainy evening, after a long and stressful day, curiosity finally won.

I dialed the number.

I expected it to be disconnected.

Instead, someone answered.

"Hello?"

It was an elderly woman.

I apologized immediately.

"I'm sorry... I found your number inside a library book."

There was a long silence.

Then she laughed softly.

"You found it."

"You knew someone would call?"

"I hoped someone eventually would."

She explained that almost twenty years earlier, after losing her husband, she had felt completely alone.

Books had become her only company.

One afternoon, she wondered how many other lonely people borrowed the same books.

So she wrote her phone number inside one.

Then another.

Then another.

"I wasn't trying to make friends," she said.

"I just wanted anyone who felt alone to know that someone would answer."

I didn't know what to say.

"Did people ever call?" I asked.

"A few did."

She smiled through the phone.

"Some only needed five minutes."

"Some talked for hours."

"One young man called every Sunday for almost three years."

We spoke for nearly an hour that night.

Before hanging up, she said something I never forgot.

"Promise me something."

"What?"

"If you ever meet someone who feels invisible... don't wait for them to ask for help."

Months later, I volunteered at our local library.

One afternoon, while shelving books, I opened the same novel.

The phone number was still there.

But underneath it, I added one sentence.

"She was right. Someone will answer."

I didn't write my number.

I simply smiled, closed the book, and placed it back on the shelf.

Because sometimes hope begins with knowing you're not the only person searching for it.

Life Lesson:

A small act of kindness can travel farther than we ever imagine. You may never know whose life you brighten by simply letting them know they are not alone.
